Pamukkale translates from Turkish as
“cotton castle”, and it really does look like a giant bright white
cotton candy castle overlooking a cool and calcium-rich mineral pool.
Pamukkale is located in western Turkey and
it is about 3 hours drive (east) from Izmir. Pamukkale is a very
popular tourist destination in Turkey which is known for the healing
properties of it’s spring thermal waters going down the great
white hillside. In the 1960’s many hotels were built in close range from
Pamukkale natural springs and used it’s unique mineral water to fill up
artificial pools, after some time it was understood that the hotels are
a true threat to this amazing place and the hotels buildings
were knocked down and cleared, later – hotels were built further away
and are not allowed to use the natural springs waters anymore.
Nowadays most of the terraces are off limits to visitors (a photo below by Ismet11
shows how it used to be) only small pools are allowed for swimming in
order to keep the existing state of the pools, and yet it is still
defiantly worth the trip. Pamukkale thermal pools are situated near
some Roman attractions sites. (like the ancient spa town of Hierapolis)
Entrance fee is about 30 Turkish lira (about 11 u.s dollars) – don’t
forget to bring a towel…
